Kabuki Theatre

Let me first start off by saying that I would definitely not want to attend Kabuki theatre in ancient Japan. I always thought that Kabuki theatre was an elaborate dance with fire and dragons and lots of dark scenes. But, it actually isn't anything like I thought it would be. All of the videos I found of Japanese Kabuki theatre were really boring. But, being as it was traditional in Japan, I might have seen one show just for the experience.

This video is an example of all of the elements of the Kabuki theatre: they show the traditional make-up, fans, wigs, and costumes. The man in the video makes extremely weird faces and when he speaks it sounds as if he is trying to sing. Also his costume seems way to big on him.
But, I guess I could sit through a live Kabuki performance just to have the experience and for an educational purpose, but definitely not for recreation.

  1. I probably agree with you on not wanting to see a Kabuki show. I said in my blog that I might, but now this post made me think twice about my response. I would see a performance for the experience, like you. Your description of the video in your blog is pretty funny. Judging by that, I'm not sure I could make it through a whole performance, given that I have a short attention span and all.

  2. I agree with you totally Larissa. The video you posted was kind of fraeky and weirded me out. Attending a Kabuki theater type play would be boring and a waste of money. Yaaawn...( :

  3. The link you posted was removed from the site...so I didn't get to watch it. But I'm gonna have to disagree with you because of a video I saw. It wasn't the most entertaining thing ever, but it didn't seem too bad. The costumes were pretty elaborate and the music was cool. I read that there are special types of drums used in Kabuki Theatre which have a unique sound to them.

  6. Hey larissa. After reading your blog, I am kinda wondering if Kabuki theater is as interesting as the website I found made it sound. I tried to watch the video to compare but it said that the video was removed. Oh well. I still think the costumes are pretty amazing. I agree with you that I would see a live performance at least for the experience.
    =)
